Dr. Bean is an assistant professor and extension specialist in urban water resources engineering and is a member of the Sustainability Human and Ecological Development group. He specializes in stormwater management, water quantity and quality issues, low impact development (LID), and sustainable urban development to reduce nonpoint source pollution.

Dr. Bean's research program focuses on the design, evaluation, and management of urban landscapes for water resource sustainability, and his Extension program focuses on urban stormwater management, and how the design and management of drainage networks can be more sustainable.

Dr. Bean received a PhD in agricultural and biological engineering from the University of Florida, and is a licensed professional engineer.

Research and Extension

  • Assessing the effects of development (e.g. soil compaction) on landscape function and processes (e.g. infiltration, plant available water, etc.)
  • Evaluating stormwater control measures (green infrastructure, wet/dry stormwater ponds) for hydrologic and water quality performance
  • Hydrologic and water quality monitoring of urban drainage systems
  • Efficient management of water in the urban landscape
  • Modeling stormwater management systems
  • Monitoring and modeling urban soil and water processes
  • Evaluating land use change on receiving waters
